Where's the P in the CDC?

4/16/2014

The official name of the CDC is Centers for Disease Control & Prevention.

So, why isn’t it CDCP instead of CDC?

Where's the P?

Why don’t we include the P in the regularly-used acronym or even use the word “Prevention” when we mention the agency?

While appreciating the history of the agency (in eliminating/controlling communicable diseases like smallpox or influenza, we’re in a new place now...a society filled with chronic disease, not just communicable disease.

I would speculate that the loss of the P as a priority in our society may have contributed to the rise of chronic disease by omission from our collective radar, that there was an epidemic brewing...one that could have been prevented.

Heart disease, heart attack, stroke, diabetes, and many cancers are the biggest issues facing us, today. We need the P!

Is merely controlling or managing disease our HIGHEST aspiration?  I hope not.  Is “not getting worse” the best we can do?  I hope not.  Is cost-effective “management” of chronic disease through medication and surgery the “end” we’re looking for?  I hope not.

With a resurrection of P, we might even see new prioroties placed on the subsidy of fruit and vegetables...and not so much on corn, beef, cheese and tobacco?? One can only hope!

Prevention, reversal, & cure are what we need most and deserve.  Shouldn’t this be our stated focus?  And, shouldn’t our goals be reflected in the name of the agency that serves our needs?

My recommendation is to change the agency name to Centers for Disease Prevention & Control.

The CDP (because so many Americans can only handle 3 letters in an acronym) or CDPC would then align current and future efforts and funding with today’s priorities and our priorities for the forseeable future.

Will this ever happen?

I hope so.

We need the P!

It's About the Food...Period

You can ignore it, deny it, or pretend it isn't true, but to prevent or reverse most chronic illness, prevent many cancers, save our environment & reverse our rising health care costs...we MUST solve food & eating, FIRST!!

Victims of our own success, we've subsidized, engineered, and built a toxic environment for ourselves.

We've successfully engineered steady physical activity and movement out of our daily routines.

And ultimately, we've engineered a food supply of cheap calories (not cheap nutrition).

We've eaten our way into a mess (for many reasons) and the only viable choice for salvation is to eat our way out. Yes, it's complex. But, no scalpel, pill, or powder has the power to save us, our vitality, our humanity, and our planet like the power of the right food choices.

In survey after survey, we prioritize our food choices based on taste, cost, and convenience ABOVE health. So let's accept that as a starting point and work with it. We must make the healthiest, most nutritious food, tasty, cheap, and convenient...period.

But, until we, the people, demand that our leaders engage in the broader debate (on eating, food, and health) rather than just the countless narrow debates (on health care)...we're destined to fail our society.

And, regardless of who ultimately pays the bills, we ALL share the cost (low or high) of our collective choices.

What can we (you) do?

With so many invested in the status quo (the sicker we get, the better they do) and profiting from our lack of progress...at the very least, we all must raise our voices and demand that a discussion of food, eating, health and "responsibility" accompanies EVERY discussion about the "right" to affordable health care.

If we don't demand the conversation...it'll never happen.

Please share this & join our mission on facebook/twitter. Thanks.
