"Really?" you say.
Listen up.
The Food Channel and Travel Channel could easily be merged into the Stuff Your Face Channel.
We celebrate indulgence on a national level. Today is National Tequila Day. Tomorrow is National Hot Fudge Sundae Day. And, Saturday is National Milkshake Day.
We celebrate eating contests and the worst of the worst food at our state fairs (pulled pork, fried pickles, Krispy Kreme bun).
We really are in a pickle...happily eating our way into a happily awaiting health care system......all the while, complaining about the high health care costs and premiums.
Coming to the defense of our toxic culture is "free choice" and "everything in moderation". But, we now know the addictive nature of concentrated salt, sugar, and fat...making normal/healthy choice difficult in light of the abnormal pleasure (dopamine release) that the unhealthy choices bring.
And, when 85% of the food environment is sickening..."everything" in moderation is still sickening.
Toss in a First Lady who'll tell us to drink more water (Drink Up), but doesn't have the courage to tell us that the water shouldn't be packed with sugar.
Isn't Coke mostly water?
Stir in the USDA, who tells us what to eat for health, warns us to cut back on fat, and then has a division dedicated to getting the country to eat more cheese.
Add a cup and a half of a burger-eating, sundae-loving leader who fought like hell for heath care, but rarely says a word about our responsibility to pursue health.
And, sprinkle on a cup of agricultural subsidy policies that are sickening, make cancer-causing poison (tobacco) cheaper, make the most nutrient-void foods the cheapest (while doing nothing to make broccoli and raspberries more affordable).
We've got a leader for fire prevention (Smokey), but NONE for health. (I volunteer)
Yes...we're really really in a strange place, indeed...a real pickle.
And, it's getting harder and harder to swallow.
