I just saw a photo of a friend of mine posted on facebook. The photo was of her face morphed into a fat version of herself. It was posted in an album titled of “Fatbook Photos”. The photo was posted by other friends of mine…purely for fun and hilarity. In fact, everyone that has seen the photo commented on how funny it is. How sad.
My friends are nice people, but it goes to show you how deep our insensitivity runs. For any “friends” that saw the photo and were themselves suffering from a significant calorie surplus (fat), they would likely be hurt and humiliated. For some reason, making fun of fat people seems to be safe. It shouldn’t be.
Maybe it’s time to remove the fun house mirrors from existence, so that parents won’t call their kids over to it saying, “Look how fat mommy and daddy look! Aren’t we funny?!” Maybe we should bring a little more humanity to our friends and neighbors. Let’s look in an undistorted mirror, for a change, one that reflects the truth of who we are. Maybe what we see won’t be so funny.
Being fat is not funny…period.
